Hemlocks in Industry
Hemlock has long been used for use in arts/crafts, for paper pulp and for saunas. In the sauna industry, Hemlock is used for both the interior and exterior frames. The best sauna companies will kiln dry there hemlocks for a period of up to 2 months. During this time the hemlock naturally cures, so no special treatments or fumigation is needed. The end result is a sauna that will have a fresh aromatic smell, especially when heated up. Canadian Hemlock is also frequently used to make Infrared Saunas , a new high-tech sauna which requires a durable wood that can endure high temperatures without warping.
The construction industry now frames, sheathes, and floors with hemlock. Mills turn the wood into windows, frame-and-panel doors, moldings, and paneling. Due to its strength and wear-resistance, hemlock also becomes reliable for ladders, stair components, porches, and for use in home spa’s.
Ease of machining and finishing have made hemlock an increasingly popular alternative to hardwood for furniture and cabinets. Lack of pitch and resin also make hemlock ideal for the dry heat of saunas.
